So what is needed for a good snowboard sock?
Comfort, warmth, breathability and it needs to look good when you take your boots off right?
Lets start off by talking about feet!
There are over 250,000 sweat glands in our feet- producing up to a half-cup of sweat a day. This perspiration and warmth provide ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive. The presence of the bacteria does not in and of itself cause odour; instead, as the bacteria consume dead skin cells and moisture, they in turn produce waste material. This waste material is the cause of foot odour. Not very nice when you think about it!
One of the reasons why feet tend to get very sweaty is that nature designed them that way for a reason. Our feet have more sweat glands per inch of skin than any other part of the body, and these glands produce sweat all the time, not just when it’s hot or when you exercise as other parts of the body do.
By producing lots of sweat, the skin stays moist and, therefore, supple. In this way, the skin of the foot can withstand all the constant flexing, squashing and squeezing that goes on with every step we take. Without a lot of sweating, the skin on our feet would rapidly become very dry and cracked, and walking could become very painful.
How many times do you finish riding and take your boots off to find that your feet are soaking wet. This isn’t because your boot has leaked. It is because your feet have been cooked and your socks/boots haven’t been able to breath efficiently. So if you are one of these people, take it in to consideration when purchasing your socks!
Our socks are designed for the active or freestyle snowboarder so most are quite thin. If you are not one of these people and often get cold feet, then try the Aimee Fuller or the Jamie Nicholls pro sock. They are a little thicker.
Now here’s the tech bit about our socks:
Using Acrylyester fiber technology and strategic silhouette construction, Sterling socks regulate your feet’s microclimate by keeping them warm and dry by getting sweat up and away from your skin. Ignore the old granny’s tale to wear two pairs of socks as feet crammed in to a boot will only make your feet colder. Proper circulation and mobility are your friends so we place padding where you need it most, on the bottom of your foot. As you know, heat rises. As you also know, heat trapped in your boot creates a sauna effect, only there’s no exit and you’re trapped. Even on the coldest days your feet will eventually sweat in this claustrophobic climate. Our sock construction allows heat and moisture to rise and move away from your foot. The result is a foot that is dry and ready for some proper snow surfing action!
Our socks are made in panels of different thicknesses.
Areas 1 and 2 are in the landing zone. The toe and heel cup are thick for comfort.
Area 3 has a reduced thread count for moisture management.
Area 4 is our articulated joint area which is designed to prevent sock bunch.
Area 5 has football sock tech which makes sure that when you pull them up, they stay up.
